Today on the blog, we\u2019re going to look at other ways of saying \u201cHow are you?\u201d in Spanish<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

When you start learning a language, you pick up a greeting or two to get the conversation going<\/strong>. In my case, it was the classic: \u2018How are you doing?\u2019 <\/span><\/p>\n

But when I traveled to the UK and started meeting people, I heard other greetings that you don\u2019t always learn in class, but only when you\u2019re actually there. My friends would introduce me to other people and say: Hey there! How’s it going? <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

So today I want to help you expand your vocabulary<\/strong>, and I\u2019m going to teach you some other ways to say hello<\/strong> in Spanish.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re visiting friends in Spain and they\u2019re going to introduce you to other people in a relaxed, informal setting, you\u2019re bound to hear some of these words.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are some typical greetings<\/strong> that we native speakers use.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

CASUAL (AND BRIEF) GREETINGS<\/span><\/h3>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

1- \u00bfQu\u00e9 tal?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

This is probably the most common way to say hello. It\u2019s used between people who know each other and bump into one another on the street or somewhere else. There\u2019s no need to give a detailed reply. It\u2019s a polite gesture, and it\u2019s enough to reply with \u201cBien, gracias \u00bfY t\u00fa?\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n

2- \u00bfTodo bien? – Are you all right?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Just like the phrase \u201cqu\u00e9 tal\u201d, it is used as a greeting and does not require a long reply.<\/span><\/p>\n

3- \u00bfQu\u00e9 pasa? – What’s up?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

This is a very informal expression. It\u2019s only used when people are very close. And, just like with \u2018\u00bfqu\u00e9 tal?\u2019, we don\u2019t expect the other person to reply. It\u2019s used as a greeting.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 For example: Two young people from a group of friends: Hey, \u00bfqu\u00e9 pasa t\u00edo\/t\u00eda?<\/span><\/p>\n

* \u201ct\u00edo\/t\u00eda<\/strong>\u201d is a colloquial way of saying \u201cguy\u201d or \u201cgirl\u201d<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

4- \u00bfC\u00f3mo andas? – How are you doing?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

It is another informal way of saying hello and is used among friends and acquaintances. As with the previous expressions, a short reply is sufficient. <\/span><\/p>\n

WORDS THAT CALL FOR A LONGER REPLY<\/span><\/h3>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

5- \u00bfC\u00f3mo va todo? \u00bfC\u00f3mo te va? – How are things? How are you getting on? <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s something you say to friends and shows an interest in how they\u2019re getting on. This form does expect a reply, and afterwards you can ask them about what\u2019s new in their life, their family, and so on. <\/span><\/p>\n

6- \u00bfQu\u00e9 es de tu vida? – What\u2019s been happening in your life?<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

You use this when you bump into someone you haven\u2019t seen for a long time. It\u2019s a way of striking up a conversation with them. You want to find out what\u2019s been going on in their life since you last saw each other. <\/span><\/p>\n

7- \u00bfQu\u00e9 te cuentas? – What’s up?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a way of saying to a friend, \u201cTell me what\u2019s been going on \u2013 has anything happened in your life?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”0px|||4px||” global_colors_info=”{}”]\n

NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION<\/span><\/h3>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

In Spain, the usual way to greet someone when you are introduced to them is with two kisses on the cheek<\/strong>, starting with the right (unlike in Italy, where you start with the left)<\/span><\/p>\n

For slightly more formal greetings, or if you prefer to keep your distance, you can shake hands. Both options are acceptable, and you can choose whichever you prefer. <\/span><\/p>\n
