Today I’m going to talk to you about how aeroplanes and airports are perfect places to practise conversation and learn Spanish phrases.
Plus, it’ll make your trip more fun.
Traveling to Spain or another Spanish-speaking country gives you the chance to speak with:
- The airline’s staff
- The aircraft crew
- The person sitting next to you
- The staff working in the various shops at the airport.
I’m going to show you some examples of situations at different stages of a flight and the specific vocabulary for each one. Get your notebook ready!

A conversation in Spanish for checking in
If you have large luggage that you cannot take on board as hand luggage, you will need to go to the check-in desk. Below is a typical conversation between airline staff and a passenger in this situation.
Note that the conversation is formal and they address each other using the third-person formal form (“you”):
Azafata: ¡Buenos días! Puedo ver su billete o su tarjeta de embarque ¿por favor?
Pasajera: Sí, claro, aquí la tiene.
Azafata: ¿Cuál es su destino?
Pasajera: Mi destino es Valencia.
Azafata: ¿Va a facturar alguna maleta?
Pasajera: Sí.
Azafata: ¿Puede poner su maleta en la cinta transportadora para pesarla?
Azafata: Disculpe, su maleta tiene un sobrepeso de tres kilos.
Pasajera: Lo siento, puedo sacar algunas cosas ¿por favor?
Azafata: Por supuesto.
Azafata: Aquí tiene su tarjeta de embarque. Siga por ese pasillo y podrá ver la información sobre su vuelo en los monitores. Muchas gracias y buen viaje.
Spanish phrases at airport security
If you already have your boarding pass, you’ll need to go through security and the scanner. Here are some phrases you’ll usually hear at this stage of your journey
- ¿Conoce usted la normativa sobre líquidos en su equipaje?
- Por favor, coloque sus dispositivos electrónicos, como portátiles, móviles o tabletas fuera de su equipaje, en las bandejas.
- Por favor, quítese los zapatos y déjelos en la bandeja. Puede utilizar las bolsas de plástico para los pies.
- If the alarm sounds on the scanner: “¿Lleva usted algo de metal?” “Por favor levante los brazos, voy a cachearle”
Spanish phrases for checking in hand luggage on a plane.
Once you’re on board the plane, you may find yourself in situations where you need to talk about your hand luggage or the emergency exit. For example:
Pasajera: Perdone, el portaequipajes está demasiado alto para mí ¿Podría ayudarme a subir la maleta, por favor?
Azafata: Por supuesto. Mire, en este compartimento ya no queda sitio, así que la colocaremos en el de al lado.
Azafata: Buenos días. Está usted sentada en la salida de emergencia, tiene que dejar todas sus pertenencias (abrigo, bolso, mochila) arriba en el portaequipajes.
Phrases to use during the in-flight meal.
Azafata: Pueden ver todos nuestros platos en la carta de comidas y bebidas.
Azafata: ¿Qué desea beber? ¿Le gustaría algo de beber?
Pasajero: ¿Tienen zumos? ¿De qué es el zumo?
Pasajero: Un zumo de naranja, por favor.
Azafata: ¿Qué le gustaría comer? ¿Desea algo de nuestro menú?
Azafata: Sólo puede pagar con tarjeta.
Announcements before landing.
- Anuncio: En unos minutos aterrizaremos en el aeropuerto de Madrid-Barajas.
- Les informamos señores y señoras que el aterrizaje será en breves minutos.
- Por favor, abróchense el cinturón de seguridad, y pongan el respaldo de su asiento y su mesilla en posición vertical.
- Azafata: Perdone, tiene que subir la persiana para aterrizar.
Frases después del aterrizaje
- En las pantallas pueden ver el número de la cinta para recoger su equipaje.
- No encuentro mi equipaje ¿dónde está la oficina de reclamación?
- ¿Dónde está el mostrador para el transbordo? Tengo que hacer escala en París.
- ¿Tiene usted algo que declarar?
- ¿Cuánto tiempo estará en Chile? Me quedaré aquí una semana.
